About Milly

Milly Stokes with her Cocker Spaniel in country home

Milly is an oil painter working near Market Harborough, using different painting techniques to capture light and a sense of place in a way that invites the viewer to enjoy her farming world.

The paintings are colourful and imply space and luminosity in an abstracted way. With the use of colour, translucent layers, spray paint, oil pastels, the paintings develop over time as Milly reacts to the canvas. The farming work influences the patterns, using a balance between mechanical and natural pattern

Inspiration

With increased use in the modern farm machinery and ever-changing farming practices, the soil has to react to what ever is thrown at it by the farmer in order to produce food.

The paintings are Millys language to show the results of modern farming, the patterns the farmers make on the land. The hidden conditions of the soils, the way nature is adapting to humans versus the way we have adapted to nature. Using traditional and contemporary painting methods Milly reimagines her thoughts when walking across the fields.

The landscape evokes memories from the work the farmer has done.  The breakfast conversations regarding weather, crops and all the farming challenges, feed into the vision.

The fences, structures, tram lines, hills, trees and neat rows of crops growing…all inspire me.
