About Milly
I am an oil painter working near Market Harborough, exploring different oil painting techniques to capture light and a sense of place in a way that invites the viewer to experience my farming world.
The paintings are colourful and imply space and luminosity in an abstracted way. With the use of colour glazes, translucent layers, spray paint, oil pastels, different mediums, my paintings develop over time as I react to the canvas.
My Inspiration
My current series of paintings are large colourful abstracted landscapes inspired by the patterns in the countryside created by farmers. With increased use in the modern farm machinery and ever-changing farming practices, the soil has to react to what ever is thrown at it by the farmer in order to produce food. My canvas must react to whatever painting technique I use in order to create the illusion of a three-dimensional surface.
My paintings are my language to show the results of modern farming, the patterns the farmers make on the land. The hidden conditions of the soils, the way nature is adapting to humans versus the way we have adapted to nature. As I paint, I reimagine my thoughts when I walked across the fields. I use tradition and contemporary painting methods.
I start my painting in the field, enveloped in the view which evokes memories from the work the farmer has done. The breakfast conversations regarding weather, crops and all the challenges, feed into my painting vision before any paint has been opened.
The fences, structures, tram lines, hills, trees and neat rows of crops growing…all inspire me.
